Japan pneumatics and compressed-air market outlook, illustrated with binoculars and Japan highlighted on a globe.

Understand Japanese demand and put equipment sales in context.

Japan is a substantial market for pneumatic components, compressors and related equipment. Demand comes from new machinery, production investment, maintenance and improvements to existing facilities.

Market size establishes the scale of demand. Production, shipments and investment indicators help explain the direction of activity.

Japan’s share of the global market

Pneumatic components

Estimated Japanese market revenue was US$1.46 billion in 2025, representing 5.3% of global revenue. This category includes valves, actuators, air-treatment components and other pneumatic components. Source: Grand View Research

Air compressors

Estimated Japanese market revenue was US$2.05 billion in 2024, representing 7.7% of global revenue for air compressors. Source: Grand View Research

These estimates cover different product categories and reference years. They should not be added together as a complete valuation of the compressed-air sector.

Country market share describes revenue attributed to Japan. It does not measure the worldwide sales of Japanese manufacturers or the share of equipment manufactured in Japan.

What current manufacturing activity suggests

Indicator review: September 7, 2026

Japan’s preliminary industrial-production report for July 2026, released on August 31, showed production increasing 0.1% from June on a seasonally adjusted basis. Production was 4.1% higher than a year earlier.

Shipments increased 2.2% from June, while inventories increased 0.5%. These measures describe different aspects of industrial activity and should be considered together. Source: METI, Indices of Industrial Production

Airmotion Directory’s interpretation: The figures show a stronger level of production than a year earlier, with little additional growth in July itself. Higher shipments support a picture of continuing activity, but the report does not establish how much pneumatic or compressor purchasing increased.

The industries served by a particular business can matter more than the overall production figure.

Where demand comes from

Four sources of Japanese equipment demand: new capacity, maintenance and replacement, process changes, and operating-cost improvements.

New equipment and production capacity

New machinery, production lines and factory investment create demand for pneumatic controls, actuators, compressors and supporting equipment. Machinery produced in Japan for overseas customers can also require components purchased in Japan.

Maintenance and replacement

Existing facilities require repairs, replacement components, air treatment and equipment renewal. These purchases can continue independently of investment in additional capacity.

Changes to existing processes

Automation, different products and improvements to handling or assembly can require new pneumatic and compressed-air equipment within an existing facility.

Operating-cost improvements

Leak reduction, pressure control, compressor management and equipment replacement can support investment where the operating savings justify the cost.

What to watch next

  • Production and shipments in the customer industries relevant to your business.
  • Machinery orders and investment in production equipment.
  • Inventory changes alongside production and shipments.
  • Capacity utilization and upgrades to existing facilities.
  • Comparable pneumatic and compressor production or shipment figures, where available.
  • Energy, financing and exchange-rate changes that affect purchasing costs.

A long-term growth forecast does not mean every year, product category or company will grow at the same rate.

About the figures

Market sizes are commercial research estimates. Industrial indicators come from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, METI.

Reference periods and release dates are identified separately. Preliminary figures may be revised, and industrial indicators do not directly measure pneumatic-component or compressor purchases.
