Compressed-air knives

Compressed-air knives: Drying. Cleaning. Blow-off. Illustration of bottle drying with the Airmotion Directory logo.

A wide stream of air. A specific job to do.

Compressed-air knives create a broad, directed air stream for removing water, clearing loose debris, and cooling surfaces. Many designs use a narrow slot to draw surrounding air into the flow. Other products sold as air knives combine several engineered nozzles across a manifold.

A compressed-air knife connects to the plant air supply. A blower-driven knife uses a fan or blower instead. Both can address drying and blow-off jobs, but their air supply, installation, and operating costs need separate comparison.

Three practical applications

Dry bottles before labeling

Residual water can interfere with the next stage of a packaging line. An air knife can remove exterior droplets before bottles reach the labeler. Bottle shape, line speed, and the surfaces that need drying determine the arrangement.

Remove water from sheet material

After washing, flat metal or plastic material may carry water into the next operation. A directed air stream can push residual water from the surface. The working width and direction of water removal matter as much as the length of the knife.

Clear parts before inspection

Loose chips and debris can obscure a surface that needs checking. An air knife can clear accessible surfaces before inspection. The arrangement also needs somewhere for the removed material to go; blowing it onto the next part solves very little.

These are illustrative applications, not reports of specific customer installations.

Three manufacturers to know

Three examples of companies offering compressed-air knives. Product ranges and configurations differ; this is not a ranking.

AiRTX

United States

Offers compressed-air knives in aluminum and stainless steel, including Slimline, Industrial, and Hurricane ranges. Designs and available lengths vary across the range.

Silvent

Sweden

Offers standard and customized compressed-air knives, including stainless-steel and modular configurations. Its range includes nozzle-based arrangements, so compare the specific design rather than assuming every air knife uses the same construction.

Vortec

United States

Offers compressed-air knives producing a flat sheet of amplified air for water removal, debris blow-off, drying, and cooling. They sit alongside its broader air-amplification and industrial cooling products.

What matters when comparing air knives?

Start with the result. Removing visible droplets, clearing loose chips, and cooling a surface are different jobs. Describe the material, working width, line speed, and required result before comparing models.

Check the air requirement. Compare air consumption at the stated operating pressure with the supply available at the machine. The purchase price of the knife is only part of the cost of using it.

Check the physical arrangement. Material, mounting space, distance from the surface, inlet connections, and where removed water or debris will collect all affect the choice.
